Design of Voltage regulator

We are starting the series of posts on the design of Basic electronic circuits. This will provide a good reference for the juniors. We are starting our posts with the voltage regulator. 

we design a series voltage regulator with the following  specifications

                     Vin=12-18v(unregulated)
                    Vo=6v(regulated dc)
                      IL(MAX)=500mA

Output waveform:




Results:
Regulated output voltage: 6.444V
 Line regulation:
       %line regulation= (∆Vo/∆Vi)*100
                                   =  (6.489-6.444)/6*100
                                   = 0.75%
Load regulation:
          %load regulation:(VNL-VFL)/VFL
                                                          =(6.489-6.444/6.444)*100
                                                           = 0.698%
